Our no holds barred advice to anyone wanting to get ahead in this business of art, music, film, television, theatre writing etc... here it is -
1. There are alot of pricks out there, many of whom will attempt to befriend you 'We'll do lunch some time' etc...
Avoid like the plague, if you network on facebook or myspace, these muppets will probably have up to 1,000 friends or more.
2. Ladies, male producers are not there to get you jobs in the next movie, they'll collect you, and use you, advise caution, if you can get a profile on them check out there clientele, or friends list if they happen to be on here. If there is a huge variety of half naked women on that list, avoid like the plague, better still tell him where he can shove his advice or his offers, 'you' are better than that, if by return he says you'll never get work in this business, then quite frankly he is talking out of his arse-hole.
3. If you want to make it in this business of creativity, then just go for it, even some genuine stars, and we're not talking about celebrities, (by the way, side note, 95% of all celebrities are talentless wankers), where were we, oh yes alot of talented stars out there, have come from all walks of life, and many of whom just got lucky, yes hard work is still involved, but there is some truth in never knowing what's round the corner.
4. Always value yourself and your ability, never hold back. To quote a film, never let anyone tell you can't do something, you want something, go get it, period!
5. Never assume, and sometimes if want to get something done, do it yourself. Oh and not all jobs are paying jobs, not all films or gigs are fully funded, but hey this is creativity, experience is important, especially if its fun and we learn something, if you're all about the money then re-evaluate what you really want from this business or the direction you're going, hey we know there is rent and bills to pay, but if you're all money, money, money, how far do you genuinely think you're going get. Celebrities have alot to answer for! If we all help each other, we'll all go far.
6. Big brother is never the way to go. Do you want to be remembered for being talented, or for someone you fucked in the pitch black under a duvet. There are priorities people and Hello magazine isn't one of them.
7. Paris Hilton, Mark Roson, these are NOT your role models, there are many more, but I'm sure you get the idea.
8. Getting turned down by studios, agents, producers, directors, etc... don't worry it happens to us all, half the time these pricks wouldn't know talent if jumped up half naked on a piano, singing 'Real talent is here, look no further'. Yes we must be realistic, but always look at the criticism, evaluate it, is it founded, keep a level head, learn from constructive advice when given, 10 percent of those that turn you down will be giving sound advice, it will help you, but learn like the clappers that 90 percent of these people don't know what they're talking about, some of these people hire Z-listers, and people that couldn't act their way out of a paper bag with satnav; so if you get turned down by them, think of it this way, you may have dodged the bullet!
9. Reality television is the devil's turd, if you're heading this direction then maybe you're not as talented as you think you are, HOWEVER, if you are genuinely talented, what the fuck are you doing on reality televison, nuff said.
10. This is an important one, never let ego get out of control... Okay so you've made it you're climbing that ladder or you're at the top of it, or the top of one many ladders in this business, never and I stress this, never, forget who you are, and where you came from. You are not god! Okay, just remember there are others less fortunate than you, who are trying to make it, so don't treat them like the crap you scrapped off your shoe. Just because you made it or are making it doen't mean you stop networking or talking to people, or stop using simple manners and courtesy, if you stop to give advice or lend a helping hand, as lets face you're now in a position to extend this courtesy, this business will be a whole lot easier and friendlier, this is not an episode of the Apprentice, so quit being selfish arse-holes!!!
AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH We feel so much better
